Columns & Handrail

This portion is designed to inform you about what it takes to finish a basement.

Framing

Framing is the first step to finishing a basement. There are a few different ways to go about framing your basement. One method consists of securing 2x4’s directly to the foundation wall. This method is inexpensive and fast, but it will not ensure that your walls are plumb and level. Many times this type of system will be torn out and replaced.

The best way to make sure your walls are level and straight is to use the traditional 2x4 method, much like the walls in the rest of your house. There are a few things you must do differently because you are building on concrete instead of wood. Your bottom 2x4 must be pressure treated. If you use untreated pine the board will rot out. When using pressure treated material you must use a galvanized fastener, otherwise your connection will be lost over time due to corrosion.

Lighting

Recessed lighting has become more and more popular over the years. It is especially convenient in an area that has a low ceiling. Other types of lighting include sconce lights, and pendent lights.

Sheetrock

When it comes to finishing sheetrock, there are many different ideas of what is considered an acceptable finish. Finishing sheetrock is a skill that takes years to master. To be efficient, you need about $5000 worth of tools that are specifically used to finish the sheetrock. With these tools you get a better, faster, and cleaner result. It also cuts down on dust throughout the rest of your home.

Insulation

Naturally basements stay a comfortable temperature all yearlong, however it does make a difference by adding insulation. Insulation a basement usually cost about $700, which over time will be recouped in energy bills. You can also insulate the ceiling as a noise barrier. Using a 5/8” Sheetrock will also reduce travel.

Bathroom

Adding a bathroom can make your basement seem more like an actual living space, as opposed to just another room. Many builders have built homes with the idea of eventually adding a bathroom. Usually there will be pipes coming out of the floor, which are drain lines that your new plumbing can tie into. These pipes can be moved are added, but it involves tearing up some concrete.

HVAC

Adding a few vents is easy and inexpensive. It is important to make sure that your furnace is capable of running more vents that what is currently hooked up.
